The Who Live At Leeds Again

Hi

Well it's six days late but I'm now able to string a few words together about last Saturdays return to the scene of the valentines day crime of 1970.

We got to the Refectory in mid afternoon to witness the unveiling of a blue plaque to commemorate the events of 1970.

This happened a rock n roll fashionably 90 minutes late.

A few speeches by Leeds University folk and then by Andy Kershaw and it was time for Pete & Roger to say a few words. Roger was asked by a reporter if at age 62 it's the beginning of the end. He replied (laughing): "It was the beginning of the end in 1969, what's the matter with you, I didn't think it was going to last to the end of the week." Classic!!

They then too a long photocall and we retired to the refectory bar for some medication!

At 8-30 they took the stage to the expected wild applause and it was evident they were up for it. Pete played like a man possessed as is his usual these days but I felt with an added extra edge of sheer violence in his playing. Roger's voice was on fine form and the rest of the band, Zak in particular, gave it their all. The sopund was excellent where we were but sight lines were less than perfect. To get a half decent spot to get some photos I went down the left hand side under the balcony to the front and had a pretty good view. Others in our group went elsewhere and had a less than perfect view.

The setlist in not necessarily the right order:-

Who Are You
I Can't Explain
The Seeker
Substitute
Wire & Glass
Naked Eye
Baba O Riley
Behind Blue Eyes
Pinball Wizard
Amazing Journey / Sparks
See Me Feel Me
Listening To You
Mike Post Themes
Cry If You Want
Eminence Front
Relay
Won't Get Fooled Again

I think that's all.

Afterwards the opinion was split as to how good the show was. Of the 9 of us who went, 5, including myself, thought it was great, two thought it was alright but were dissappointed with the poor view and one was dissappointed with the lack of hits! The 9th person was impressed with how good they still were having last seen them in 1974!!

The gig was filmed in High Definition according to the vans outside and the camera crew inside were everywhere it seemed. Looking forward to the DVD. In the meantime the CD of the gig has been ordered from http://www.themusic.com/detail.cfm?id=9000073

It was excrutiatingly hot inside. My shirt was unwearable afterwards and I bought a bootleg shirt just to have something dry to put on. The rest of us were in a similar state.

It was a great way to spend a summers Saturday in England and who would have thought I'd have met Peter Blake in the process!!

Dave
